ON A HILL
Overlooking the False Bay horizon, this house is a tribute to old-world elegance and stature, with a warm family heart.
There is a certain stateliness that is rarely found in a
home, but from the moment you step inside L’Horizon, you are
aware of being surrounded by history and tradition.
Despite the richness and elegance, everything in this
house was purposefully built around family. The downstairs
formal reception rooms flow from one side to the other
into a wonderfully welcoming family-kitchen-dining room,
continuing into a conservatory that leads out onto
the garden and pool.

There is not one room in this house
that has not been touched by the workmanship
of Branko and Saša. From the balistrade,
the purpose-made glass-panelled transoms
above the two inter-leading reception doors,
to every inch of cornice and skirting and
each mirror frame, cabinet door
and cupboard drawer.
The house was in much need of TLC, and renovations
and extensions were planned around the very busy lives
of this family. It was important for the family to be together,
yet be private and undisturbed in their own spaces. The formality
of the house – accentuated by high ceilings, open spaces
and a monochromatic palette – serve them well as they
balance life from concluding formal business
dinners to raising young adults.

Wherever a piece of wood had
to be cut, altered or positioned,
Petika&Co.’s ability to deliver
flawless precision is visible.
Even the chest of drawers
in the guest bathroom, although
not made by them, was customised
to accommodate the oval-shaped
basin, which adds to this
room’s unique character.

The kitchen, in all its glory, is the
piece de la’resistance of L’Horizon.
This is where the family
congregates, making it the
heart of this home.
A full glass-front walk-in pantry and
U-shaped centre island is what makes this
kitchen unique. The woodwork fully supports the
structure and also enhances the finishes
of glass, copper and granite.

The art of Petika & Co.’s craftsmanship
lies in shaping solid wood into pieces
of furniture art. Guests of the family
come to this table and
automatically run their hands
over the silky grain and smooth edges –
not knowing why, but subconsciously
understanding its place and beauty.
A solid oak wood table stands at the centre of the
spacious family living area. At this table, guests
are welcomed, the family share dinners,
the children debate over
love and life.

The en-suite bedrooms complete
the circle of living in this family home.
The vanities and cupboards in all of the rooms
mirror the personalities of the inhabitants
and provide the space required for
their storage needs.
Every bedroom has a cupboard equal to that
of a walk-in closet and its bathroom has
a full vanity. Each personality was considered
to accommodate and reflect the diverse and interesting
needs of the family members – from a Comrades
runner to a fashion designer and post-graduate
business students. Each one of them has
a comfortable space to which they can
retire for privacy, peace and quiet.
