PETIKA & COMPANY

THE PERFECT
HOLIDAY HOME

Apart from recreating the tradition of seaside holidays, client and craftsman established the perfect collaboration between comfort and design in a cottage in a small reserve on the Cape coast.

The vision for this holiday home and weekend get-away
included considered design, well crafted finishes and
warm-hearted hospitality. It is in this secluded house
where the owner is at her happiest, snuggled up
to a large fireplace with a glass of red wine, surrounded
by friends and joyful banter. The story of Kleinbos Huis
is testament to a true collaboration, that brought together
the talents and experience of a local builder, a renowned
architect, a close friend and interior designer and
Petika & Co.’s quality craftsmanship.

The interior decoration and
design is stylish and well considered,
with most items being hand-picked,
while all the woodwork in the house was
custom-built by Saša and his team. Shades
of white and grey resemble the beach and
ocean, while warm wooden tones pay tribute
to the uncomplicated heritage
and authenticity of the family’s holidays.

The wooden-decked patio at the edge of the fynbos reserve,
with the beach and ocean only a stone’s
throw away, provides the perfect shelter
for relaxed days spent with family
and friends.

Upon arrival you are welcomed
through the kitchen – an apt entrance,
considering that it really
is the heart of the house. Although
it is small, it is perfectly planned,
ergonomical, and flawlessly finished.
It is here where everyone congregates
to pour, cut, cook, and assemble
dishes and drinks.

In the making of Kleinbos Huis the budget was
not unlimited, but no expense was spared in creating
a kitchen that is a pleasure to be in – from the corner
basin that allows optimal use of space to the hinges
that open and close doors and drawers
that run on tracks as smooth as silk.

Although the master suite
occupies the mezzanine level
in the apex of the roof, it is very
much part of the open plan flow
of the house. The landing at the
top of the stairs provides
a brief hiatus between downstairs
living and upstairs privacy.

Everything about this house combines a traditional
idea with modern execution. An elegant French oak staircase
with stainless steel cables climbs effortlessly upwards into
the old-school thatch roof, where it is met
by a barn door on exposed polished metal tracks,
which is the entrance to the main bedroom.
